Need to have the transmission on my 2002 PT Cruiser checked - I changed the
fluid & filter and now it intermittently downshifts hard from 2nd to 1st
gear(It's an automatic transmission).
Any recommendations on a reputable repair shop?

Jake's Transmission off of Hillsborough Rd.
384-1663. As with everything, do your homework. Check out the problem on the
web if you can, to see if you are headed in the right direction.

Good luck,

Scott

I'm trying not to be the bearer of bad news but.....

I use the Cottman Transmission shop off off James Jackson
Ave in Cary. Jeff Bickford has told me not to change very
very high mileage tranny fluid. He says that tranny fluid is
a cleaner. Applied new to an old tranny it disolves the
varnish off of the valves and walls of the inside of the
tranny. Some valves would have rubber seats around them. But
when you wash the varnish off the fluids now blow by.

I truely wish you luck.

A second high opinion of Jake's. Over the past 10 years or so, they
have had the opportunity to take advantage of my situation in more
than one case, and have always been informative, fair and done a great
job.

Jake himself died a few years ago but the folks still there carry on
the tradition of an honest mechanic.

As far as your specific problem goes my Dodge PU truck (now with 140K
on the same transmission) had two different problems that Jakes found,
one was a faulty TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) on the side of the
throttle body, and 2) a faulty brake sensor (I think it was something
to do with the brake lights) under the dash. Both would cause the
transmission to downshift intermittently, and especially fall out of
overdrive, which you won't necessarily sense unless you are watching
the tachometer.

Rose & Sons (now called Supreme Auto Service) downtown on South St has
done good transmission and other work at good prices for me in the
past. I've had a couple of van transmissions rebuilt by them
(different vans - their work held up fine :)

Mike's Transmission in Durham. He has two locations, both of which are
around the old Durham Bull's Baseball Park. The owner, Martin Terry,
grew up in northern Durham and took over his father's business. The
company has been around for years serving the community.
